# Same-Day Dentistry

General dentistry

Same-day dentistry means finishing a treatment in a single visit. Bonding and simple fillings often take one appointment, some ceramic crowns can be made and fitted the same day, and selected implant cases receive a temporary tooth on the day of surgery. Vita Smile offers same-day dentistry. Your dentist confirms what can be done on the day after examining you.

## Key takeaways

- Bonding usually takes a single visit, and some ceramic crowns can be designed by computer and made and fitted the same day [1][2].
- Chairside CAD/CAM crowns show high short-term survival in studies, but longer follow-up is still needed [4].
- In a Cochrane review, implants loaded immediately showed no clear difference in first-year failures from implants left to heal first [5].
- Implants placed straight into an extraction socket survived about as well as delayed ones: 97.4% vs 97.5% [6].
- Root canal treatment usually takes two or more appointments [3]; your dentist confirms after the examination what can be done on the day.

## At a glance

- **Bonding:** Usually one visit
- **Chairside ceramic crowns:** Made and fitted in one visit
- **Laboratory-made crowns:** Usually two visits
- **Root canal treatment:** Usually 2 or more visits
- **Temporary tooth on an implant:** Possible in selected cases

The basics

## What is same-day dentistry?

Same-day dentistry is not a specialty but a way of organising treatment: a tooth, or a clear stage of its treatment, is examined, treated and finished in one appointment. Whether that is possible depends on the clinic's equipment and on what the examination shows.

These treatments can, in general, be completed in a single visit:

- **Composite bonding**Resin is shaped directly on the tooth to repair chips or close gaps, usually in one visit of about 30 to 60 minutes per tooth [2]. See [composite bonding](https://vitasmile.istanbul/treatments/composite-bonding).
- **Simple fillings**The same kind of resin is used to fill cavities [2], and a small filling normally takes one appointment.
- **Chairside ceramic crowns**With CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and manufacturing), the tooth is scanned, the crown is designed on a computer, milled from a ceramic or resin block in the clinic and fitted in the same visit [1][4]. Without a milling unit, the crown is made in a laboratory and takes two visits [1]. See [dental crowns](https://vitasmile.istanbul/treatments/dental-crowns).
- **An implant with a temporary tooth**In selected cases an implant goes straight into the socket of a tooth that has just been removed [6], and a temporary tooth is attached early, in some trials on the same day [5]. The final tooth follows once the implant has healed. See [dental implants](https://vitasmile.istanbul/treatments/dental-implants).
- **Urgent care**Root canal treatment can begin by removing the infected pulp, with a temporary filling until the next appointment [3]. See [root canal treatment](https://vitasmile.istanbul/treatments/root-canal-treatment).

So "same day" often describes a stage, not the whole treatment [3][5].

Is it right for you?

## When is a same-day option suitable?

A same-day option tends to suit a small, predictable repair, or a case where the examination shows healthy gums, no active infection and enough sound tooth or bone. When infection, bone, your bite or laboratory work needs more time, it is better to wait. Your dentist confirms what can be done on the day after examining you.

### A same-day option may suit you if

- A tooth has a small chip, gap or uneven edge [2]
- A damaged tooth needs a ceramic crown that can be milled chairside [1][4]
- An implant can be placed and firmly anchored at the visit [5][6]
- You need urgent care for toothache, even if treatment continues later [3]
- Your gums are healthy and your X-rays show nothing to treat first

### It may be better to wait if

- A tooth is infected: root canal treatment usually takes two or more appointments [3]
- There is too little bone, or the implant is not firmly anchored [5]
- You want a large change in shape or colour: veneers may suit better than bonding [2]
- Several crowns or a full arch are planned
- You grind or clench, or your bite needs adjusting

Step by step

## What happens at a same-day visit

A same-day visit follows the usual order of treatment; the decision and the treatment simply happen in one appointment.

1. Before you travel

    ### Online consultation

Send photos or a recent X-ray. A dentist replies with a personalised plan and a written quote, confirmed after the examination.
2. At the visit

    ### Examination, X-rays and scan

Your dentist checks the tooth, gums and bite, and looks for infection. X-rays show the roots and bone; a scan lets a crown be designed on a computer [1][4].
3. At the visit

    ### The decision

Your dentist explains what can be done today, what needs another visit and why. Nothing starts until you agree.
4. Same day

    ### Treatment

A tooth is bonded or filled, a crown is milled and fitted [1], or an implant is placed with a temporary tooth if it is firmly anchored [5].
5. Afterwards

    ### Aftercare and follow-up

You receive care instructions. Implant teeth and root canal treatment need further visits to finish [3][5].

What can be done on the day depends on your examination and X-rays; your dentist confirms it after examining you.

Compare your options

## Same-day vs conventional: crowns and implant teeth

Both routes follow the same principles; what changes is where the tooth is made and when it goes on. Chairside milling saves a crown visit [1], and early temporary implant teeth showed no clear difference in first-year failures [5]. Your dentist confirms which route suits each tooth.

| | Same-day route | Conventional route |
|---|---|---|
| Crown: visits | One, when milled chairside [1] | Usually two, with a temporary crown [1] |
| Crown: where it is made | Designed and milled in the clinic [1][4] | In a dental laboratory [1] |
| Crown: evidence | High short-term survival; longer studies needed [4] | Five-year data on our crowns page |
| Implant: when the tooth goes on | Temporary tooth within a week, sometimes the same day [5] | After the implant has healed, traditionally 3 to 8 months [5] |
| Implant: who qualifies | Selected cases; the implant must be firmly anchored [5] | Most people with enough bone and healthy gums |
| Implant survival by placement | 97.4% placed at extraction [6] | 97.5% placed 3–4 months later [6] |

Crowns: Oral Health Foundation [1] and a 2026 review of chairside CAD/CAM materials [4]; see also [dental crowns](https://vitasmile.istanbul/treatments/dental-crowns). Loading: Cochrane review of randomised trials, up to one year [5]. Placement: review of 10 studies, 700 implants [6].

Before you decide

## Limits and trade-offs of same-day treatment

A same-day result is convenient, but it is not always the right result for a particular tooth:

- Healing cannot be skipped: a temporary tooth on the day does not shorten the time an implant needs to bond with the bone; the final tooth comes later [5].
- Implant evidence has gaps: only 3 of the 26 trials in the Cochrane review were at low risk of bias [5], and some studies reported 90–95% survival for immediate placement against more than 95% for delayed placement [6].
- Shorter track record: chairside crowns show high short-term survival, but longer studies are needed [4].
- Cost: same-day ceramic crowns often cost more than other crowns because of the convenience [1].
- Some treatment takes time: root canal treatment usually needs two or more appointments [3].
- Bonding has limits: it stains more than porcelain and can chip over time [2].
- Plans can change: if the X-rays show infection, or an implant is not firmly anchored, a staged plan is safer.

- 15 trials

immediate vs conventional loading: no clear difference in first-year implant or prosthesis failures [5]
- 97.4% vs 97.5%

implant survival, placed at extraction vs later [6]

From our dentist

> “What can we finish before I fly home? It is a fair question on the first morning, and I can answer it only after I have examined the tooth, the gums and the X-rays. A small repair on a healthy tooth often needs no waiting. Infection, too little bone or a bite that needs work usually make a few extra days the better and longer-lasting choice. You hear what I would do and why before we start, and if the plan changes, you hear it from me first.”

## Choosing a clinic in Istanbul for same-day treatment

When you travel, the plan should still follow your teeth, not your flight. Before you book, ask:

- Which parts of my treatment can be done on the day, which need another visit, and why?
- Are crowns milled in the clinic or sent to a dental laboratory?
- If an implant with a temporary tooth is planned, what happens if it is not firmly anchored on the day [5]?
- If a same-day plan has to change after the examination, how does that affect my stay and my quote?
- Who checks a temporary tooth or an unfinished root canal once I am home [3]?

At Vita Smile, your written plan sets out each visit once you have been examined, so you know before treatment starts what will be finished on the day. Questions

## Same-day dentistry: frequently asked questions

Can't find your answer? Our coordinators are happy to help on WhatsApp.

[Ask on WhatsApp](https://wa.me/905434595095)

Can you get a crown in one day?Sometimes. Some ceramic crowns can be designed by computer and made and fitted in a single visit [1], where a clinic mills crowns chairside. Otherwise the crown is made in a laboratory and takes two visits [1]. Your dentist confirms which applies after the examination.

Are same-day crowns as good as laboratory-made crowns?Studies of chairside CAD/CAM restorations report high short-term survival, but the evidence is limited and longer studies are needed [4]. Our [dental crowns](https://vitasmile.istanbul/treatments/dental-crowns) page summarises five-year data for crowns in general.

Can a dental implant be placed on the same day as an extraction? In selected cases, yes. In a review of 10 studies, 97.4% of implants placed into a fresh socket survived, against 97.5% placed later; some studies reported slightly more failures with immediate placement [6]. Infection, bone and stability decide it.

Can I leave with teeth on the day of implant surgery? In selected cases a temporary tooth or bridge is attached soon after surgery, in some trials the same day [5]. The final teeth follow once the implants have healed. For a full arch, see [All-on-4](https://vitasmile.istanbul/treatments/all-on-4-dental-implants).

Can a root canal be done in one visit? It usually takes two or more appointments, which may last 1 to 2 hours or sometimes longer [3]. Treatment can often start on the day, with a temporary filling until the next visit [3].
