## Key takeaways

- Packages can include your treatment, hotel, transfers, an interpreter and a personal coordinator; your written quote lists exactly what is included in your case.
- The plan you receive online is a first plan: your dentist confirms it after the examination and X-rays, and explains any change before treatment starts.
- Before you book, ask who will treat you, whether the work is guaranteed, what aftercare is provided and who pays for extra flights, hotel and remedial work [1].
- Wait at least 24 hours after restorative treatment and 72 hours after implant placement before flying; a week is recommended after most dental procedures [5].

What is included

## What does a dental treatment package in Istanbul include?

Your treatment comes first. Everything around it is arranged for you, so you can travel light and focus on your new smile. At our clinic in [Ataşehir, on the Asian side of Istanbul](https://vitasmile.istanbul/contact-us), a package can include:

- Free online consultation and written plan: send a few photos of your teeth or a recent X-ray, and a dentist reviews them and talks your options through. You receive a personalised treatment plan and a written quote, free and with no obligation to book. Start with our [free online consultation](https://vitasmile.istanbul/online-free-doctor-consultation).
- **Personal treatment coordinator**One named contact plans your visit and answers questions before, during and after treatment.
- **5★ hotel accommodation**A comfortable stay at a partner hotel, booked around your appointment dates.
- **VIP airport transfers**Private transfers between the airport, your hotel and the clinic.
- **Multilingual personal interpreter**An interpreter joins your appointments so nothing gets lost in translation.
- **Written itinerary**When you are happy with your plan, your coordinator agrees dates with you, reserves your appointments and arranges your hotel and transfers. You receive a written itinerary before you travel, with the pick-up details.
- **Aftercare and follow-up**Remote check-ins after you return home and a clear plan for any follow-up visits. Your coordinator stays in touch for up to two years after you fly home.
- **Flight support**Help with planning your flights. Support with flight costs depends on eligibility and on your treatment plan, and your coordinator confirms in writing what applies to you.

Note the words "can include": not every item applies to every patient, and your written quote lists exactly what is included in your case. Vita Smile is licensed by the Turkish Ministry of Health; you can read how we plan treatment on our [about us](https://vitasmile.istanbul/about-us) page.

Step by step

## How does the package work, from first message to flight home?

Your treatment, hotel, transfers and coordinator are planned together, from your first message to your flight home. This is the usual order.

1. Before you travel

    ### Free online consultation

Send photos of your teeth or a recent X-ray, or ask your coordinator to arrange a video call with a dentist. Both are free and without obligation.
2. Before you travel

    ### Written plan and quote

You receive a personalised plan and an itemised written quote that names the implant system and materials planned for your case.
3. Before you travel

    ### Dates and itinerary

Your coordinator agrees dates with you, reserves your appointments, arranges your hotel and transfers, and sends a written itinerary.
4. Arrival

    ### Transfer to your hotel

If your package includes transfers, a private driver takes you from the airport to your hotel and to the clinic.
5. At the clinic

    ### Examination and X-rays

Your dentist examines you, takes X-rays and confirms the plan, explaining any change before treatment starts.
6. During treatment

    ### Appointments with an interpreter

An interpreter joins your appointments, and your coordinator remains your contact throughout your stay.
7. Back home

    ### Aftercare

Your coordinator stays in touch for up to two years and arranges remote check-ins with your dentist.

What applies to you is listed in your written quote; your dentist confirms the plan and the number of days after examining you.

After the examination

## What is not decided until you are examined?

The General Dental Council's advice is that a qualified dentist should examine you before you receive a treatment plan or a cost estimate, and should ask about your medical history, general health, any long-term conditions and smoking [1]. That is why the plan you receive online is a first plan. Photos show your smile and your bite; a panoramic X-ray shows the roots and bone, which photos cannot. At the clinic, your dentist examines you, takes X-rays and confirms:

- **The treatment for each tooth**A tooth may need [root canal treatment](https://vitasmile.istanbul/treatments/root-canal-treatment) before a crown or veneer, or the bone may need grafting before [dental implants](https://vitasmile.istanbul/treatments/dental-implants).
- **The number of days**Our typical plans are 5–7 days over 2 visits for [veneers](https://vitasmile.istanbul/treatments/dental-veneers), 5–7 days for a [Hollywood smile](https://vitasmile.istanbul/treatments/hollywood-smile), and for implants a first visit of 3–7 days when no bone graft is needed, then 3–6 months of healing before the final teeth. [Crowns](https://vitasmile.istanbul/treatments/dental-crowns) need at least 2 sessions, with 1–2 weeks of laboratory work. Treatment needed first can add time.
- **The final quote**It is confirmed after your examination at the clinic.

Any change is explained before treatment starts, and you decide whether to go ahead.

Online and in the clinic

## What you know before you travel, and what is confirmed in Istanbul

The online plan and the examination work together: the first lets you plan the trip, the second confirms the treatment.

| | Before you travel | After the examination in Istanbul |
|---|---|---|
| Treatment plan | A first, personalised plan from your photos or X-ray | Confirmed by your dentist; any change explained before treatment starts |
| Quote | A written, itemised quote, free and with no obligation | Confirmed after the examination |
| Length of stay | Our typical plan for your treatment | Confirmed once your teeth, gums and bone have been checked |
| Treatment needed first | Can only be suspected from photos; an X-ray helps | Decided after the examination and X-rays |
| Package services | Listed in your written quote and itinerary | Arranged by your coordinator around your appointments |

Questions to ask

## What should you ask a clinic before booking?

The General Dental Council suggests questions to ask any clinic abroad [1]. Ask them of us too, and keep the answers in writing:

- Who will carry out my treatment, and what qualifications do they have? [1] You can read about [our dentists](https://vitasmile.istanbul/our-doctors) before you decide.
- Is the clinic regulated, and is the dentist registered? [1]
- Will the team speak my language, or will you provide a translator? [1]
- Is the work guaranteed, and for how long? [1] Our written warranty sets out what it covers, for how long and under which conditions before you start; zirconia crowns, for example, carry a 10-year written warranty against manufacturing and workmanship defects.
- What aftercare do you provide, and who can I contact for advice after the treatment? [1]
- If there are complications or I am unhappy, is further treatment included, and who pays for extra flights, hotel and remedial work? [1]
- Do you have a complaints system, and can I see a copy? [1]

The NHS advises caution if a clinic pushes you to decide quickly, gives you little information, or does not talk about possible complications or aftercare [2]. From our dentist

> “An online plan is built from what a photo can show, and a photo cannot show me the roots, the bone or what sits under an old filling. That is why your first appointment in Istanbul is an examination with X-rays, not treatment. If what I find changes the plan, you hear the reason from me and receive an updated written quote before anything starts, and the decision stays yours. A package is only good if the treatment inside it is right for you.”

Planning the trip

## How should you plan your flights and stay?

- **Talk to your own dentist first**They know your dental history and may be able to advise you [1][3].
- Book flights after you have your written plan, and choose flexible tickets where you can. The NHS advises allowing for the possibility of extending your stay and the cost of possible return trips [2], and crowns, bridges, veneers and implants often need repeat visits and a series of adjustments [3].
- **Stay long enough to recover**The NHS advises staying in the country where you had treatment for a suitable length of time before travelling home, and being clear about how your aftercare will be coordinated [2].
- **Choose your airport**Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) is on the Asian side of Istanbul, like the clinic; Istanbul Airport (IST) is on the European side, across the Bosphorus. If your package includes transfers, your coordinator confirms the pick-up details in your written itinerary.
- **Clinic hours**We are open every day from 07:00 to 22:00, and your appointments are reserved before you travel.

Flying home

## When can you fly, and what should you take home?

Before you fly, your dentist should check that you are well enough to travel [4]. A 2023 article in the British Dental Journal suggests waiting at least 24 hours after restorative treatment, 24–48 hours after a simple extraction, 72 hours after root canal treatment, implant placement or a surgical extraction, and at least two weeks after a sinus lift [5]. Where possible, it recommends a week after most dental procedures and six weeks after a sinus lift [5]. The authors note that more research on commercial flights is needed [5], so agree your return date with your dentist. After surgery, flying carries a risk of blood clots in the legs or lungs, and some patients need medication to prevent them [4].

- Records: before you fly home, ask for copies of your records: prescriptions, scans and X-rays [4].
- Insurance: take out travel medical insurance, tell your insurer about your treatment and check that it covers complications [4]. Putting right a problem from treatment abroad is usually at your own cost [4], and insurance may not cover the cost of travelling back to the clinic [3].
- At home: follow-up care can be hard to arrange and the NHS may not pay for it [4], and the NHS does not reimburse dental treatment abroad [2]. Register with a dentist at home and keep regular check-ups, alongside the remote check-ins your coordinator arranges.

- 24 hours

minimum wait before flying after restorative dental treatment [5]
- 1 week

recommended wait after most dental procedures, where possible [5]
